OECD Illicit Trade Week: Business Underlines Value of Public-Private Partnerships

Business at OECD had a large business delegation at the OECD Working Party on Countering Illicit Trade and at the OECD Forum on Countering Illicit Trade. At the Working Party on Countering Illicit Trade, Business at OECD advanced several proposals for future work to complement the OECD’s ongoing initiatives related to online marketplaces and enhancing transparency in FTZs. These include discussions which could include private sector perspectives on how to enhance information sharing and collaboration across supply chains and governments, and research which could look more closely at controls on critical raw materials or precursors. Business at OECD remains committed to advancing the OECD’s new workstream on non-counterfeit illicit products (NCIP)s, which expands the OECD’s historic focus on counterfeit goods to illicit goods that may violate other legal and regulatory frameworks, and should lead to structured cross-sectoral policy guidance to enhance coordination and gaps within enforcement efforts.

At the OECD Forum on Countering Illicit Trade, our Executive Director Hanni Rosenbaum provided opening remarks highlighting the importance of public-private partnerships to effectively address the harmful impacts of illicit trade on innovation and economic growth. Members of our global business network including Syngenta, eBay, AB InBev, Amazon, Intel, Johnson & Johnson, Novartis, Maersk, and more contributed to discussions on counterfeits, e-commerce and consumer safety, trade fraud, and medical devices. We look forward to continued engagement with the OECD on illicit trade to ensure its challenges and risks are appropriately addressed.
